Canada Soccer announced today that the Calgary United Soccer Association (CUSA) has signed an agreement to host the 2024 Canadian Futsal Championships. The men’s and women’s competitions will take place April 11-14, 2024.
For 2024, Canada Soccer has changed its host city model, meaning that while the national governing body will remain the rights holder of the event, CUSA will take greater ownership of the event by forming an organizing committee and directing the event.
“We have a strong partnership with the Calgary United Soccer Association and we are excited to make this announcement together today,” said Jason deVos, interim general secretary, Canada Soccer. “Last year’s championship in Calgary was one of our greatest successes ever and we are excited to work together to propel our national futsal championships forward.”
The Seven Chiefs Sportsplex and Chief Jim Starlight Center will be the venue for next year’s event, owned and operated by the Tsuut’ina Nation. “CUSA is honored and excited to see the 2024 Canadian Futsal Championships return to Calgary for a second year in the trenches. We are ready to build on the success of the 2023 Championships which demonstrated grassroots interest in futsal in Western Canada and its potential,” added Raj Uppal,President of CUSA. “Our partnership with the Tsuut’ina Nation, both for our league program and national championships, aligns with our goal to continue to grow the sport across the province. Alongside our partners, Canada Soccer, Calgary Tourism and Tsuut’ina Nation, we are excited to welcome competitors, officials and fans in April 2024.”
The impact of the Championships was felt in Alberta and neighboring provinces. Alberta alone saw considerable adult program growth of 293 percent. British Columbia and Saskatchewan have also seen growing interest in the sport, demonstrating the positive impact of national championships on the growth of futsal nationally. “Last year was the first time we hosted the Canadian Futsal Championships and we were happy to help make the event such a success,” said Carson Ackroyd, Senior Vice President of Sales at Tourism Calgary. “This spring, we will once again welcome athletes, coaches, families and fans from across the country for another incredible event at the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex. We know all visitors will have a great time in Calgary.
in 2024, women’s futsal was included for the first time in the history of the competition, in which clubs from eight provinces and territories competed. A total of 224 players and 64 coaches formed 16 teams that competed in the men’s and women’s competitions – the largest amateur futsal competition Canada Soccer has ever hosted to date.
