– I can assure everyone that we are a country with an independent legal system, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday at a technology conference in Montreal.

The statement concerns the arrest of mobile phone giant Huawei’s chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, on Saturday in Vancouver.

Wanzhou is wanted and wishes to be extradited to the United States, the Canadian Department of Justice informed the Globe and Mail newspapers.

Trudeau did not want to comment further on the matter, but referred to the US arrest warrant issued when Wanzhou was due to change planes in Vancouver. Chinese authorities reacted strongly to this arrest and addressed strong criticism to Canada and the United States.

Neither Canada nor the United States would provide details on why Wanzhou was arrested.
