The Norwegian Food Safety Authority will investigate the ten largest agricultural companies
The Norwegian Food Safety Authority is preparing to start with group audits of agricultural businesses. Seven of the world’s largest companies are Norwegian.
The Norwegian Food Safety Authority will move away from inspecting individual facilities for fish farming and is now equipping its staff to start with group audits. This is revealed in the annual report of the animal welfare inspection.
– We are in the process of putting together a separate team that will only work with risk-based group supervision, with targeted monitoring of companies over time, says Lise Petterson, regional director south and west at the Norwegian Authority for food safety, for Intrapoisson.
The Norwegian Food Safety Authority writes in its annual report that in 2024 it will audit the ten largest salmon companies. According to Intrafish, seven of the world’s 15 largest salmon companies are Norwegian-owned: Mowi, Cermaq, Lerøy, Salmar, Grieg, Nordlaks and Nova Sea.
In 2022, the Norwegian Food Safety Authority carried out its first group audit of an agricultural business, the annual report says. The company is not named.
Kristina Furnes, communications manager at Grieg Seafood, told Intrafish she welcomes the Norwegian Food Safety Authority’s initiative.
– Improving the welfare and survival of fish is one of the challenges that aquaculture has to solve, and it is very important to work in a preventive, structured and comprehensive way with this, says Veurne.
