The Norwegian Meteorological Institute fears a repeat of 2018:

Sunshine from a cloudless sky. Temperatures approaching 30 degrees. This is the outlook for southern Norway, as far as meteorologists can see.

Now they fear it will take too long. So the summer dream can turn into a nightmare for many.

– I’m afraid June will be dry, and I hope it won’t be the same in July, state meteorologist Håkon Mjelstad told Dagbladet.

Hottest in Hardanger

On Friday, the sun warmed up all of southern Norway, but especially Kvamsøy in the Hardangerfjord. There, the temperature reached 26.4 degrees.

The small island was closely monitored by other measuring points in western Norway.

– Of the 20 at the summit yesterday, 17 were in western Norway, says Mjelstad.

It can also report sunshine and heat on Saturday, but now the good weather is spreading across the country.

There is good news for northern Norway, where on Friday it was gray and around ten degrees Celsius with onshore winds.

– Today, it seems that the anticyclone extends to the north, so that the whole continent benefits from sunshine. We are moving towards a day of stay and sun across the country, explains Mjelstad.

nearly 30

In southern Norway, the temperature on Saturday is between 22 and 26 degrees, in northern Norway between 15 and 20.

After that, a well-known summer pattern will set in, with increased heat in the south, especially in Agder and eastern Norway. In northern Norway it can be rainy, and around ten degrees in many places.

– In the north, it looks like it will be wetter on Sunday and Monday, then it will dry up during the week, says Mjelstad.

In southern Norway it is quite different, especially in Agder and eastern Norway. The sun and the heat will persist there and will reach a temporary peak in a week.

– We look like we can reach 30 degrees next week. It could happen as early as Friday, says Mjelstad.

FEAR REPEAT: In the summer of 2018, farmers faced poor fodder harvests due to drought, and problems arose in providing enough food for animals. Now the Meteorological Institute fears a repeat of the dry summer. Photo: Tor Erik Schrøder / NTB

– Does that mean that as far as the eye can see, it will be sunny and warm?

– Yes, but we hope that maybe there will be a change. We only have scattered showers, but it does not help much.

Fearing a repeat in 2018

If this change is delayed, all the sun and heat will no longer be good news. Not for everyone, anyway.

– Farmers have to irrigate, says Mjelstad.

He thinks that the summer is likely to be very dry and hot in the south, with the consequences that can occur in nature.

– The chances of this happening are greater than we would like.

– Do you fear a repeat of the dry summer of 2018?

– I can imagine that could happen. I hope not, but it’s starting to look like it, says state meteorologist Håkon Mjelstad.
