Former US President Donald Trump has been told he is the target of the investigation over his handling of secret documents, according to ABC News. That could mean a federal indictment is on the horizon.
He writes ABC News After policy first reported that Trump had been told he was the target of a federal investigation.
The Justice Department typically sends a so-called “target letter” to people who may be indicted in a federal grand jury investigation, the two outlets write. This gives them the opportunity to present their own evidence or testify before being prosecuted.
Prosecutors consider an investigative target to be someone for whom there is “substantial evidence” of being connected to a crime, writes Politico.
The news comes just two days after Trump’s defenders met with people from the Justice Department to discuss the documents case.
Trump is under investigation by federal authorities both for his handling of classified documents after he left the White House and for his alleged attempts to cling to presidential power following his 2020 election defeat.
In August 2022, FBI agents entered Trump’s residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida and found approximately 13,000 documents. Around 100 of them have been marked as secret, although Trump’s lawyers have previously said all classified documents have been turned over to US authorities.
