Hubert Hurkacz and Mate Pavić have qualified for the second round of the doubles ATP 1000 tournament in Toronto. The Pole and the Croatian beat the Glasspool/Heliovaar pair, which was better than our competitor in Washington.
Hubert Hurkacz launched the fight successfully in Toronto. The white and red tennis player defeated Aleksander Bublik 6:3, 7:6(2) in the first round of the singles match.
On Tuesday, Craig Boynton’s charge began competing in doubles. Last week in Washington, the Wrocław native paired off with Frances Tiafoe, a representative of the hosts. This time, at the ATP 1000 tournament in Canada, he teamed up with the very experienced and titled Mate Pavic.
The Pole and Croatian’s rivals were Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara. These are the exact same opponents who beat Hurkacz and Tiafoe in the already mentioned tournament in Washington. Then in the second round, the Briton and Finn proved better in straight sets. Our tennis player definitely wanted a rematch now.

The start of the match was not easy for Hurkacz and Pavić. In the Polish representative’s first service game, there were three consecutive break chances for the rivals. Luckily, from then on, the 26-year-old sent some really good passes to the other side, and everything at the net was finished by the Croatian partner.
The gentlemen showed up well in the third game of the match. They looked like a very well-matched couple. They communicated effectively and were much better at typical double exchanges in the service box. They immediately used the first break point and beat the rivals 3:1.
Hurkacz and Pavić added another break at 4:1. At the decisive point, Heliovaara made a mistake. The Finn and his colleague from Great Britain were no longer able to pit their rivals against each other in the opening set. Mate Pavić finished the match with a serve.
The second set was full of service games won with great confidence by the servers. Both Glaspool and Heliovaara have raised their level in this element. However, the Polish-Croatian pair was no worse and responded to opponents with quick serve actions.
For the first ten games of the second set, the returners won only ten points in total. But it’s nothing. Hubert Hurkacz and Mate Pavić had two break points at the end of the set. The Pole’s first comeback didn’t prove effective. The Croatian, on the other hand, read the service direction perfectly in the next point.
Thus, Hurkacz and Pavić beat their rivals and then finished the job in the service game. The Pole and the Croatian are in the second round of the Toronto tournament.
