Another World Cup day, another unexpected result. This time it’s about the game of the Americans, who sensationally lost to Lithuania 104:110.
Only two teams haven’t lost en route to the quarter-finals. But the United States, favorites to win gold, are not among them.
On Sunday, the Americans had to sensationally recognize the superiority of Lithuania and took the next step not from first, but from second place.
The European team beat the United States 110:104, leading 31:12 after the first quarter. Steve Kerr’s players then tried to close the gap, but they ran out of time. Anthony Edwards scored 35 points, but that didn’t help either.

– It’s even difficult for me to speak now. It was a tough game from the start. And it’s a great victory for our country, our players and our coaches. I am happy that we did this for our country, our families and our friends. We must not stop now, quite the contrary, said Vaidas Kariniauskas, the author of the 15 points, in an interview with the media.
The Lithuanians formed a real collective. No less than seven of their players have reached the bar of ten points thrown. And it is, with Germany, the only undefeated team at the world championships.
“Luckily we can meet again, that’s all I can think of at the moment,” American star Edwards told reporters.
The Germans confirmed their great form by beating Slovenia 100:71 on Sunday. They didn’t even care that after the first ten minutes they lost 11:25. Dennis Schroder scored 24 points and registered 10 assists. Balkan team leader Luka Doncic scored 23 points in 30 minutes under his name but only made 9 out of 22 attempts from the field.
Latvia did the impossible in this tournament: they beat France and Spain. The Europeans have now finished the job by also triumphing over Brazil (104:84). They qualify for the quarter-finals. It’s an astonishing result, considering their absence from the team of biggest star Kristaps Porzingis.
The dreams of gold medals at the World Championships are still valid. Canada recovered 12 points in the fourth quarter alone, beat defending champions Spain 88-85 and secured passage to the next stage. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks made the big throws. It’s the end of the World Cup for the Spaniards.
