Massacres in Indonesia
At least 16 people have been found dead in Indonesia’s far eastern province of Papua after a massacre believed to have been carried out by armed separatists.
The attack is considered one of the worst in the region in several years, and as many as 31 people, most of them construction workers, are believed to have been killed. Separatists have been fighting for secession from Indonesia for more than half a century in what is largely a low-intensity conflict.
– The latest information shows 16 dead, says Binsan Panjaitan, a local military leader. The dead have not been identified and Panjaitan has not provided any information on how they were killed.
The defense previously released an eyewitness description that said those killed had their throats slit or were shot in what appeared to be executions.
