Venus Williams made her second appearance this year. In Den Bosch (WTA 250), the winner of seven Grand Slam titles was eliminated after a thriller with Céline Naef. Canadian Bianca Andreescu is in the next round.
In January, Venus Williams (WTA 696) won a match in Auckland. The American’s next performance was only recorded this week in Den Bosch. She was eliminated in the first round on Tuesday after losing 6-3, 6-7(3), 2-6 to Céline Naef (WTA 202). The winner of seven Grand Slam titles squandered the 6:3, 4:2 lead.
Williams converted three of his six break points. Naef used four of his 10 break chances. The Swiss scored five points more than the famous American (94-89). Naef’s next opponent will be Caty McNally (WTA 62), who converted five out of six chances to break Katie Volynets (WTA 106) 6-2, 6-1.
Venus Williams turns 43 on June 17, but doesn’t want to end her career just yet. The American has won five Wimbledon titles and won the US Open twice. In total, she has won 49 titles on the WTA Tour (finals balance 49-34). She had been waiting for the trophy since 2016, when she was the best in Taipei. She reached the final in 2017 in three major events (Australian Open, Wimbledon and WTA Finals). Williams topped the charts for a total of 11 weeks.
Bianca Andreescu (WTA 37) won 6-4, 6-4 against Zeynep Sonmez (WTA 217). The 2019 Canadian US Open champion erased eight of her 10 break points and converted four of her five break points. Defending champion Ekaterina Aleksandrova (WTA 26) served seven aces and collected 28 of 35 points on her first serve to beat Yevgeniya Rodina (WTA 327) 6-3, 6-4.
