Canada created a pleasant surprise by easily beating Iran 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-22) in the opening match of the third round of the Tokyo Olympics. Such a decision theoretically makes it easier for us to win the first place in the group.
Canada was under pressure
The Games did not start well for us. In the first match after a fierce battle, we lost after a tie-break with Iran 3:2. The first victory is always important, and as reigning world champions, we couldn’t afford to have more of these mishaps. In the second round, we confidently beat Italy 3:0 (25:20, 26:24, 25:20), but Iran still had everything in their hands after beating Venezuela 3:0.
Canada lost the first two matches. With Italy after a tie-break and with Japan 3:1. Results like this put them against the wall, and Canada’s representatives are doing just fine. Thanks to such a result, we no longer have to look at the rival.
There’s a chance for first place
We have matches against Venezuela (July 28), Japan (July 30) and Canada (August 1). If we win all these matches by three points, ie 3-0 or 3-1, we will take first place in the group.
The fight for the top of Group A will allow our volleyball players to knock the theoretically weakest rival of Group B from fourth place. However, if we took second or third place, we would know our rival by drawing lots. It was decided to implement such a solution so that the teams would not try to find a weaker rival.
In Group B, the United States leads with six points, followed by the Russian Olympic Committee with the same number of points. Brazil are third with five points. Then France, Argentina and Tunisia.
