The British Meteorological Institute warns that low polar pressure can bring low temperatures and large amounts of snow to large parts of the country.
They say Scotland could experience the coldest day of the year tomorrow, with the temperature in the highlands expected to drop to around 10 degrees below zero on Monday night. Northerly winds will make the effective temperature even colder.
– We could potentially see some of the coldest temperatures so far this year. The lowest we saw was in January at -10.4, so we could see something lower than that, said meteorologist Honor Criswick Sky News who first brought up the subject.
The weather phenomenon confuses
– Expect fairly cold conditions
The wintry weather could bring up to 10cm of snow to higher elevations in Scotland and 5cm to lower elevations. A yellow snowfall warning was issued in north-east Scotland from 6 p.m. on Sunday.
From midnight on Sunday, the yellow snow and ice warnings spread to north-west England and north-east Scotland and moved further up the east coast to Hull on Tuesday.
– We expect fairly cold conditions and snow showers over the next few days over Scotland and northern England, Criswick said.
He says it is not yet time to put away winter clothes for the British.
– It will be quite cold and the wind will pick up a bit so it will be quite cold.
Predicts severe cold weather
The UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) has issued a cold weather alert and placed North East England, North West England and Yorkshire under a level three warning, the rest of England being at level two.
According to the NHS, a level three warning means there is a 90% chance of extreme cold, freezing conditions or heavy snowfall, which could increase health risks for vulnerable patients.
