What a battle! Linette and Kenin almost made a surprise

Magda Linette played doubles in Madrid (WTA 1000). His partner was Sofia Kenin. The Pole and the American fought an exciting battle with the Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and the Brazilian Luisa Stefani, seeded sixth.

Magda Linette played her first singles match in Madrid on Thursday. Knocked out Marketa Vondrousova after the marathon. On Friday, the Poznań player joined the doubles competition. Her partner was Sofia Kenin, who triumphed in singles at the 2020 Australian Open. The Pole and the American scared off dangerous rivals. In the end, they lost 6-4, 2-6, 7-10 against Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani (n°6).

In the first set, Linette and Kenin got a break at 1:0 and kept the advantage until the end. At 5:4 and 30-40 they defended the break point, and the decisive point at 40-40 fell to them. In the second set, the Pole and the American won the application of the rivals and led 2:1. Later, however, Dabrowski and Stefani dominated, winning five games in a row.

The super tie break was an uphill battle and there was no two-point advantage for either pair for a long time. The first point went to Dabrowski and Stefani, but then it was a one point lead for Linette and Kenin or a draw. It was only at the end that the resistance of the Poles and the Americans was broken. From 7 to 6, they lost the last four points.

For Linette, it was the fourth doubles appearance this year. She was eliminated from the Australian Open in the first round (along with Xiyu Wang). In Indian Wells, the Pole reached the quarter-finals (against Caty McNally), and in Miami she qualified for the semi-finals (against Bernarda Pera).

Dabrowski triumphed at Madrid last season, but his partner then was Giuliana Olmos. The Canadian has 13 doubles titles on the WTA Tour. She is a finalist of Wimbledon 2019 in tandem with the Chinese Yifan Xu. Stefani is a bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics with Laura Pigossi. The Brazilian has seven doubles titles in the main series.

For Kenin, it’s the end of the show in Madrid. In singles, she was eliminated in the first round after a painful loss to Belgian Maryna Zaniewska (0:6, 3:6). The American still can’t get back into shape after health problems.

Linette reached her first Grand Slam singles semi-final at this year’s Australian Open. On Saturday in Madrid, she will face Mirra Andreyeva, who will be 16 on that day. The sensational teenager dismissed Canadian Leylah Fernandez (2021 US Open runner-up) and seeded No.13. Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia.
