The first Grand Slam final of Roland Garros 2023 is behind us. Tim Puetz and Miyu Kato won the mixed doubles title on Thursday, disqualified a few days ago in doubles.

It’s a really unusual story. A few days ago, Miyu Kato was devastated after accidentally hitting a girl on the pitch with the ball and along with her partner Aldila Sutjiadi was disqualified in the third round of the doubles (more here). The Japanese forfeited all points and prizes won in doubles. Her only consolation was mixed doubles and she really wanted to do her best in this competition.

On Thursday, Kato and partner Tim Puetz competed in the mixed doubles final. They managed to turn the tide and win the championship trophy. The Japanese-German duo beat Canadian Bianka Andreescu and New Zealander Michael Venus 4:6, 6:4, 10-6.

As is often the case in a mixed match, the match had a few twists and kept you on your toes until the end. Already in the opening match, the service lost Venus, then Kato and Puetz missed the opportunity to increase the result. From 4:2 for the Japanese and the German, the situation on the court began to reverse. Andreescu and Venus looked better on the return. In the eighth game, they managed to break the pass from the representative of the Land of the Rising Sun. After the change of sides, the site also lost a tennis player from our western neighbors and the opening match fell between a Canadian and a New Zealander.

The match was very balanced in the second set. Single bullets decided the fate of this part of the match. Andreescu and Venus can certainly regret their chances. In the eighth game, they got a break point on the Japanese pass, but the Canadian spoiled the return. Now it has become nervous in the service of gentlemen. First, the New Zealander lost the bid. After switching sides, the German with the help of his partner saved two break points and served the victory in the set.

As the match was tied after two sets, the super tie-break proved to be the deciding factor. Crucial points for the fate of this match were decided after the first change of sides. Kato and Puetz won 3-5 straight state balls and edged their rivals. After 95 minutes, they created three match balls and ended the game with the first.

Under such circumstances, Kato and Puetz, who played together for the first time on professional courts, became the winners of the 2023 Roland Garros mixed doubles tournament. For the Japanese and the German, this is the first Grand Slam championship. For the victory in the mixed game of the international championships of France, they will receive a check for the sum of 122,000 euros to be shared. The pair of Andreescu and Venus they defeat will take half that amount.
