Home hope was superior and won with 3.54.04. There was enough time for the three-time Olympic gold medalist from Beijing earlier this year to set a track record. Schouten also had the precedent.
Wiklund entered the penultimate pair with Czech veteran and world record holder in the distance, Martina Sáblíková. It was a fierce battle, but Wiklund proved to be the strongest and entered with a time of 3:58.31. He lasted for 3rd place.
Canadian Isabelle Weidemann teamed up with Schouten and finished second with 3.57.70
Last Friday, Wiklund claimed his first World Cup victory in the 3,000 meters at the season opener in Stavanger. This weekend sees new world cup races for elite skating in Seinäjoki, Finland.
