After two victories against much lower ranked opponents, Canada was expected to score goals for the Austrian team and easily collect three more points. After the first period, the score was 3:1 for the Maple Leafs team. After the second set, the score was 6:1. With such a result, no one believed that anything could happen to the defending champions.
But on Tuesday night, the greatest comeback in World Cup history took place at the O2 Arena in Prague. The Austrians won the third period 5-0 to tie the points with the favorite. The goal to make it 6-6 came 49 seconds before the end of regulation time. It was won by Marco Rossi of the Minnesota Wild.
The Canadians and their fans were in for a shock. Fortunately for the team from across the Atlantic, the game did not end in total disgrace. In an overtime situation played 3 on 3 on the ice, John Tavares scored the winning goal at the 15th second. Thus, Canada won two points and took the lead in Group A. Austria, on the other hand, thanks to an incredible renovation, won its first point of this year’s championship and took a step forward to stay in the elite.

The second match of Group A on Tuesday also ended with a surprise. The Danish national team was the favourite against Norway, but lost 0:2. The key goal was scored in the 28th minute by the only 18-year-old striker Michael Brandsegg-Nygard. Then, with 11 seconds left, Eirik Salsten scored the result with a shot into an empty net.
Tuesday’s defeat essentially means the end of the Danes’ dreams of playing a bigger role in this year’s championship and joining the fight for the quarter-finals. In turn, for the Norwegians, the victory means three valuable points, which allowed them to move up from the last place in the standings. The worst team in the Czech competition is now Great Britain, who are the only team out of 16 not to have scored a single point.
