World Cup 2022: Canada – Morocco. The “Atlas Lions” showed a claw

The Canadians, although in Qatar delighted with their hearts and attacking tactics, after two matches, losing 0:1 against Belgium and 1:4 against Croatia, they lost their chances of making it out of the group. Morocco, in turn, entered the clash from the second-placed position in Group F, with 4 points in their scores thanks to an unexpected draw with Croatia and a sensational 2-0 win over Belgium.

The “Atlas Lions” took the lead in the 4th minute. After a long pass from one of the Moroccan defenders, Steven Vitoria (former Lechia Gdańsk player) made a mistake, which passed too lightly to Milan Borjan (former Korona Kielce goalkeeper), then a fatal error was made by the goalkeeper who started outside the penalty area, who played directly at the feet of Hakim Ziyech. The Chelsea player had no trouble putting the ball in the net.

In the 23rd minute, the Moroccans increased their lead. Achraf Hakimi sent a long pass from the right side of the field and Youssef En-Nesyri came between the two Canadian defenders and a right footed shot from the right side of the box hit the short corner to make it 2- 0 for the North African side. The Sevilla forward has become his country’s first international to score at least one goal in two World Cup finals.

The Canadians scored a goal by contact before the break. Sam Adekugbe drilled down the left side and Nayef Aguerd clipped his flat pass so badly that he headed the ball into his own net.

In added time in the first half, the Moroccans touched their rivals’ net for the third time. Ziyech crossed a free kick from the left side of the field into the penalty area, and the ball was cleared by John Herdman’s side En-Nesyri who hit the right post with a half-volley. However, the goal was disallowed as Aguerd was caught offside.

The second half, where the Canadians dominated, did not change the result. The Moroccans rose from first place in Group F thanks to a victory over a North American team and a goalless draw between Croatia and Belgium.
