Disney+ is expected to perform like Netflix in much of the world next year.
Disney is doing what Netflix started in Norway in May
What are we talking about? Yes, block account sharing. The company announced that it will begin blocking password sharing outside the home starting November 1 of this year in Canada. This is how Netflix also started: starting cautiously and gradually rolling out to more countries until they finally took the plunge and went global. Netflix also launched this operation in Norway in May this year.
It’s unclear how Disney+ will monitor the accounts and ensure they’re not shared, but customers nationwide have been informed via email:
“We are implementing restrictions on your ability to share your account or login information outside of your household. You cannot share your subscription outside of your household,” the email being sent states, among other things.
To ensure they don’t violate the country’s laws, the company also changed the terms of the agreement to state that it “analyzes your account usage.”
Disney CEO Bob Iger already indirectly announced that this was going to happen when he said during the third quarter report presentation that many people are sharing their accounts with people who don’t live under the same roof. The boss said at the time that they had the technology to put a stop to this, and now they are. It would be nice if they made adding a user outside the household a little less expensive than paying for a full subscription.
