TORONTO, ONTARIO – U SPORTS announced Tuesday the roster for the 2023 U SPORTS men’s hockey all-star team, a team that will compete in Hockey Canada’s World Junior Championship selection camp.
22 players will make up the selected team, led by Queen’s Gaels head coach Brett Gibson and Calgary, McGill and RMC assistant coaches Mark Howell, Dave Urquhart and Richard Lim.
11 players from Team Canada’s gold medal-winning group at the 2023 FISU World University Games in Lake Placid return to a select team, while four schools, including UNB, Calgary, Alberta and Queen’s, send a maximum of three players on the all-star team.
Headlining are some of the nation’s best scorers, with OUA leaders Dalton Duhart (Queen’s) and Simon LaFrance (UQTR), alongside AUS leaders Austen Keating (UNB), Brady Gilmour (UNB) and Matthew Struthers (StFX). ) ). Meanwhile, none of Canada West’s top three scorers found a place on the team.
At the back, standout defensemen Andrew McCormick, Noah King (Calgary), Jacob Paquette (Queen’s), Scott Walford (McGill), Dylan Plouffe (Alberta) and Gunner Kinniburgh (Saskatchewan) take the reins, with Connor Ungar (Brock) and Kai. Edmonds (TMU) acting as practice goals.

“What I did with my staff was we tried to select the best team that we could present to challenge the Canadian World Junior camp,” head coach Brett Gibson told 49 Sports. “I think our obligation is to challenge them to try to give them a little adversity before they get to [the World Juniors]”
In recent years, emphasis has been placed on selecting a team of “all-star” players, often relying on top scorers. Hockey Canada advised U SPORTS to provide the greatest possible challenge in preparing World Junior players.
