Oslo Mayor on climate change: – Fortunately, we have competent activists
Mayor Anne Lindboe recently had the honor of inaugurating a photo exhibit in front of City Hall on how indigenous peoples in the Brazilian Amazon are being affected by climate change and other threats.
Lindboe hopes that many people in Oslo will take the time to visit the exhibition.
– This is an incredibly important exhibition. We are facing a climate and nature crisis in Oslo and around the world. And we must take this seriously. The exhibition shows the great destruction and we can understand what is really happening, she said.
Lindboe is happy that many people can now learn about the situation of the indigenous people of the rainforest. At the same time, she also points out that Norway’s indigenous people, the Sami, also feel climate change well in their daily lives.
– It is absolutely necessary that we also see our vulnerable nature through their eyes, take it seriously and also take care of what we have here in Norway.
Lindboe believes that climate and nature activists have an important role to play.
– Unfortunately, sometimes there is a battle between more commercial interests and the rights of indigenous peoples. Fortunately, we have incredibly knowledgeable activists, both in Norway and many other countries, who are helping us to be open and see the destruction that is really happening.
The photo exhibition is located outside the town hall and is presented by the Rainforest Fund in collaboration with Brazilian human rights organizations and indigenous networks.
Rainforest Foundation Secretary General Tørres Jæger believes it is important that central authorities understand what is needed now to help indigenous people.
– It is indigenous peoples who are at the center of both the natural crisis and the climate crisis. It is important that this is recognized. And that they have the means to preserve their own territories.
– This means that we must grant them land rights, we must give them the opportunity to live in and from the lands that they themselves protect, he says.
