The decision to resume work in the Arctic Council, but to exclude Russia, shows the failure of Western policy in the High North, believes the Kremlin.
The Arctic Council announced on Wednesday that it would resume work, but without Russian participation. Norway, the United States, Canada and the Nordic countries sit on the council, which will ensure the sustainable development and protection of the Arctic environment.
Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said in a statement that she had returned to work. She says according to the state news agency RIA Novosti that Russia cannot be isolated in the Arctic.
“It’s a decision that can only prove one thing: that attempts to isolate Russia in the Arctic are wishful thinking and that Western partners are trying to create the impression that they are independent on issues Arctic,” Zakharova said.
She says that Russia is the most important country in the Arctic.
“It is clear that the current policy line on the Arctic in the West has failed and does not try to help solve the problems that affect all of humanity,” Zakharova said.
