In the first group stage, the Canadians were placed in group C. At the very beginning, two clashes of infernal difficulty awaited them – with the Serbs (0:3) and the Americans (0:3). Later, however, they won the next three matches (against Kazakhstan, Bulgaria and Germany) and qualified for the second phase.
In it, they ended up in Group F. So far, they have played two matches there. First they beat Thailand 3-1 and then lost 3-0 to Turkey. They currently sit fifth in the standings, which doesn’t guarantee a bye to the quarter-finals. If they want to stay in the game for this phase, they need a win against the tournament co-hosts.
