Perth curlers have capped a superb run of performances by winning a prestigious title in Canada.

Robin Brydone and Duncan McFadzean, who play for Team Whyte alongside captain Ross Whyte and Euan Kyle, took victory at the AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic.

They had reached a third final in a row and, having lost the previous two to fellow Scots Team Mouat, were even more determined to get the job done.

In Ontario, the Olympic champion team Edin stood in the way of obtaining the trophy.

It was a close battle from start to finish, but Team Whyte pulled out a 7-6 victory after an extra end.

“It’s been a great start to the season,” said Brydone, a former Perth High student.

“If you had told us we would have made three finals, won a title and made another semi-final in our three events so far, we would have bitten your hand.

“However, early season success means nothing unless we can move on and start going deeper into Grand Slams.

“So I guess the next thing is to go to the first Grand Slam of the season next month and see how far we can go.

“From there we want to try to close the gap to Mouat and try to put ourselves in a good position to go to the World Championships.”

Team Whyte had to pull off a stunning comeback in the quarterfinals against Canada’s best team led by former world champion Brad Gushue.

“Giving Gushue a 5-0 lead in the first end probably wasn’t quite our number one game plan,” vice-skip Brydone added with a smile.

“However, it shows how much we have progressed as a team to be able to bounce back from a bit of adversity.

“We had to face one of the best teams in the world and ended up winning. Overall, we have performed very well recently.

Reflecting on the final victory and title triumph, captain Ross Whyte said: “It was a very good curling match.

“We knew it was always going to be very difficult against a big team, so it was great to come out on top after reaching the final in our previous two events.

“We had a little luck all week, but this time it seemed to be our week.”

Their victory in the biggest event of the season so far, which featured the top four in the men’s world rankings, completed a run which has seen British Curling teams reach the final of every event they have entered in the over the past month in Canada.

“It seems like people are really starting to see Scotland as a nation with real strength, so it’s fantastic to help lead that charge,” added Whyte.
