(Canada 0-4 Australia) Australia had their hands full going into the final group match against Canada, but then rose to the occasion. With this, the Canadian Olympic champion is eliminated from the championship.
Just nine minutes into the game, Hayley Raso put the Australians ahead. She collected a cross in the area and sent the ball into the net. The goal was approved after a VAR check.
Mary Fowler then took the crowd to heaven when she put the ball in the goal ten minutes before the break. The Manchester City player sent the ball into the roof of the net after some noise and babbling on the pitch. The cheers stopped when VAR disallowed the goal for offside.
However, Raso snuck in a corner soon after and became a two-goal scorer. Fowler scored to make it 3-0 after the break, and in extra time Australia were awarded a penalty. Stephanie Catley was safe and made it 4-0. This allowed Australia to claim the group victory by six points.
Olympic champion Canada finished in third place with four points and was therefore eliminated from the World Championships.
Nigeria drew 0-0 with Ireland to advance to the round of 16 with five points. They lost the pool win and will face the winner of Group D, which will likely be England.
Australia’s next opponent will be runners-up from the same group. Denmark are favorites to progress and face the host country. England lead Group D with six points, while the Danes, like China, have three. Haiti is last with zero.
