Mauro Caviezel with the starting number eight drove just over halfway through Canada before hitting one of the gates hard. The skis slammed and the Swiss fell hard.
It appeared that the 34-year-old had lost consciousness. After a few minutes, Caviezel could be seen standing with significant facial injuries.
– It’s terrible every time this happens, and we have to cross our fingers that nothing very serious has happened here, Kjetil Jansrud from the commentary booth told Viaplay.
Marco Odermatt, who is leading the race, seems clearly worried for his compatriot.
The Swiss newspaper Look writes that the 34-year-old is doing well under the circumstances. He is said to have cuts to his face after hitting the gate and is being airlifted to the finish area where he will be treated by team medics.
The race was suspended while the Swiss was taken away in an ambulance helicopter and only after 20 minutes did the race start again.
Aleksander Aamodt Kilde drove eleventh and finished second almost four tenths behind Odermatt.
– For my part, it was finally a fairly well run race, but Odermatt’s ass, what are we going to do with him? He’s a badass, Kilde told Viaplay.
Adrian Smiseth Sejersted (starting number 18) chased.
unhappy bird
It’s not the first time the Swiss has been unlucky. Back in January 2021 he crashed badly in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and suffered a nasty head injury. He also once struggled with a torn Achilles heel.
The World Cup races at Lake Louise were the first he has contested since the 2021 Cortina World Championship Super-G race. A race in which he has never finished.
