Canadian Soccer Federation and Women’s National Team Reach Preliminary Agreement
Following a conflict between the Canadian Soccer Federation and its women’s national team, they have now reached an agreement in principle on funding for 2022.
The terms of the deal mirror those that apply to the men’s national team, according to the football federation, with per-match incentives and performance-based pay. A final collective agreement for the women’s and men’s national teams is still under negotiation.
– It’s about respect, it’s about dignity and it’s about leveling the competitive environment in a world that fundamentally treats people differently, said the union’s general secretary, Earl Cochrane, in a statement.
Canada’s women’s national team is the reigning Olympic champion, but preparations for the world championships this summer have been marred by a labor dispute with the union. The conflict particularly concerns discrimination.
In February, the national team played in the “SheBelieves Cup” in protest after being told that if they boycotted the tournament they would face legal action.
On Monday, football president Nick Bontis resigned in support of the women’s national team.
