A sensational day at the WTA 500 in Berlin! Yelena Rybakina lost her chance to win the title. The Wimbledon champion was eliminated after losing to Donna Vekic. Victoria Azarenka also said goodbye to competition.
Jelena Rybakina (WTA 3) made her first appearance since Roland Garros. In Paris, she forfeited the third round match due to illness. Kazaszka has only won one game on the Berlin lawn. She was eliminated on Wednesday after losing 7-6(1) 3-6, 4-6 to Donna Vekić (WTA 23).
It took a long time for the first break of the match. After losing the first set in a tiebreaker, Vekić took a 4-2 lead in the second. The Croatian kept the advantage until the end. The fate of the third set was also decided by a break. Rybakina returned the pass at 3:3 and failed to recover the loss.
The meeting lasted two hours and 14 minutes. Rybakina served 15 aces, eight of them in the opening set. Vekić saved two break points and converted two of his seven break points. It was the second meeting between these tennis players. In 2021, at the Tokyo Olympics, Kazakhstan turned out to be better.

Vekić earned her 12th victory over a Top 10 player, the second this year. She beat Caroline Garcia in the final of the Monterrey tournament. The Croatian’s next opponent will be Elina Awanesian (WTA 81), who raised 1:6, 0:2 and won 1:6, 6:3, 6:2 Anna Blinkova (WTA 44).
Petra Kvitova (WTA 9) defeated Nadia Podoroska (WTA 86) 6:1, 6:1 in 49 minutes. The Czech played five aces and used five of her six break points. She gave her opponent no chance to break. Caroline Garcia (WTA 4) won 6-3, 6-2 against Jaimee Fourlis (WTA 218). In 88 minutes, the Frenchwoman scored 21 out of 24 points on her first serve. She used three of her 10 break points.
There was also a delay due to rain. Five matches in the first round have been completed or played in full. The clash of Belarusians ended in surprise. Wiktoria Azarenka (WTA 19) used just one of six break points and lost 4:6, 4:6 to Alaksandra Sasnowicz (WTA 70).
Bianca Andreescu (WTA 35) lost 6-7(0), 5-7 to Marketa Vondrousova (WTA 53). In the second set, the 2019 Canadian US Open champion squandered a 4-1 lead. In the one-hour-and-40-minute match, the Czech knocked out five out of seven break points and turned three of her six chances into breaks.
Maria Sakkari (WTA 8) beat Alize Cornet (WTA 60) 6-4, 6-1. The Greek responded 13 out of 15 break points and used five out of nine break points. She brought the balance sheet of meetings with the French to 4-1. These tennis players met in the second tournament in a row. Last week, the Cornet turned out better.
