The Spanish national team entered the 2023 Davis Cup finals without its two biggest stars: Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz. This great weakness was already visible from the first match. In Wednesday’s match in Group C, Armada lost 0:3 to the Czech team.

In the decisive doubles match, Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram defeated Ivan Dodig/Mate Pavić in three sets.

In turn, the second best team in Davis Cup history, 28-time winners Australia, lost 1-2 to Great Britain in the first Group B tennis classic. The British were already confident of success in singles matches thanks to wins by Jack Draper against Thanasi Kokkinakis and Daniel Evans against Alex de Minaur. Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell won an honorary point for Antipodean tennis players, beating Evans and Neal Skupski.

The hosts’ disastrous day ended with defeat for the Italians, who lost 0-3 to Canada early in Group A competition in Bologna.
