The British were already confident of success in singles matches thanks to wins by Jack Draper against Thanasi Kokkinakis and Daniel Evans against Alex de Minaur. Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell won an honorary point for Antipodean tennis players, beating Evans and Neal Skupski.
The hosts’ disastrous day ended with defeat for the Italians, who lost 0-3 to Canada early in Group A competition in Bologna.
