Several wealthy businessmen have asked Canadian authorities for permission to drain a lake on Oak Island. The bottom may hide objects that have played a central role in world history.
With them, the businessmen will likely bring organist and cryptologist Petter Amundsen, the man behind the most recent theory about the real identity of author William Shakespeare. Through careful decoding, he found a kind of treasure map hidden in it. the first collection of Shakespeare’s playswritten in the 17th century.

Amundsen’s conclusions are disputed, but they are bizarre, far beyond reason. So it’s hard to ignore the evidence.
And it’s about to get even more interesting. Because the treasure map leads to what is probably an artificial lake, and the “X” on the treasure map is in the middle of the water. On Tuesday, NRK broadcasts the documentary Shakespeare’s Hidden Truth, which traces the author’s story from Stratford-upon-Avon, through Francis Bacon, to Oak Island.
– One of the islanders came down in a diving suit and said there were tree stumps a meter below the surface. The theory then becomes that this dam was engineered, which is a very effective way of hiding things. If so, this is fantastic engineering, Amundsen tells NRK.no.
The big question of course is what is really hiding there. Oak Island has been the subject of intensive treasure hunting for over 200 years, following the discovery of a mysterious and then legendary mine on the island, called the Oak Island Money Pit.
This is what they hope to find
But Amundsen’s literary journey led him to a lake on the island. The clues in the book also gave a hint as to what he would find there.

The organist
– Here are probably four objects that were in the temple in Jerusalem. The seven-armed candlestick, or menorah, table of shewbread and silver trumpets, stolen by the Roman Titus. Probably also literature, manuscripts that no one has seen, which will correspond to this story as it is told in Fama Fraternitatis, the first manifesto of the Rosenkreutzer, says Amundsen.
The Rosicrucians are believed to have been, and perhaps still are, secret fraternities dealing with the occult in the early 17th century, and Francis Bacon is believed to have played one of the leading roles in this fraternity.
It’s difficult to get into this story without becoming thoroughly familiar with alternative world history. A story of Templars and Freemasons, with sacred objects, great conspiracies and secret brotherhoods. Without going into the details of these theories, it goes without saying that the discovery of these objects would be a great moment.

But they are not allowed to dig
In August, the pond will therefore be emptied and the land examined, if the treasure hunters obtain authorization from the authorities.
– What will happen in August?
– So they have to empty it, but they are not allowed to dig. However, they will investigate using advanced seismic. They then spend a week with an empty pond and everything has to go back to exactly how it was before. But I’m afraid of the consequences if I’m right that there is an entrance to something at the bottom of the pond, he said.
– For what?
– Yes, at first I thought it was just about manuscript hunting, and that I was going to find out. I didn’t know that I would find traces of a religious treasure, it appeared later in the process, explains Amundsen.
-And that gave you cold feet?
– It was a little too late to withdraw, and now this story has become so fantastic that it must be told. But I kind of hope that whatever is there stays buried, because I think it’s better that it doesn’t get discovered, he said.
– Let this story live as a well-founded myth, which can provide exciting experiences to those who believe in it. It’s funny that there’s a debate about Shakespeare’s authorship, and I think the world would be a poorer place if we had all the answers.
It depends on the authorities
Much of the responsibility now falls on Canadian authorities, who will decide over the summer whether to allow landowners to drain the lake. But it’s unclear what will happen if Amundsen’s predictions come true that there actually is a cave built there by a secret brotherhood.
– I expect the authorities to intervene fairly quickly if the seismic studies show there is something there. If they found something and recovered it, it would only benefit a few. The authorities must therefore take responsibility, he said.
– I hope they realize that this can become a place where people want to make a pilgrimage, and so they will do their part to make that accessible, and plan a museum experience around that. It allows a little adventure into everyday life, he says.
Not quite done with secret fraternities
With the dam drained, Petter Amundsen says he is temporarily done with Shakespeare, at least for now. But that does not mean that he is done with occultism and the brotherhood called the Rosicrucians.
– I plan to study other European connections to this story. Like Paolo Sarpi, who was helped by Francis Bacon to publish a theologically problematic book, or the painters Guercino and Poussin, who both seem to have had something to do with it.
– They were also Rosicrucians?
– Impossible to say with certainty, as no one has recognized membership. It is conceivable that Rosicrucianism is not the unit, but that it is the first Freemasonry. Many questions arise from this, he says.
The documentary The Hidden Truth of Shakespeare is broadcast on Tuesday on NRK1.
