The 2023 US Open Grand Slam competition will end on Sunday. Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev will fight for the men’s singles title. The women’s doubles final will also be played.
After 14 days of competition, only two candidates for the title remained. The favorite for the deciding match (which will start at 10 p.m. Polish time at the Arthur Ashe Stadium) of the men’s tournament will of course be Novak Djokovic. The Serb is 9-5 against Daniil Medvedev on tour. On the other hand, the Russian has already shown in New York that he cannot be written off.
Djokovic’s historic occasion
Djokovic writes the history of world tennis. On Sunday, he will fight for his fourth US Open title. He had previously won here in 2011, 2015 and 2018. If he wins the US International Championship, he will win his 24th Grand Slam trophy. This will equal the absolute record held by Australian Margaret Court.
– I realize that every time a Grand Slam final is another chance to write history. I’m aware of it and of course I’m very proud of it, but I don’t have much time. I also don’t allow myself to think about these questions and think about history in this way. When I did it in the past, for example in the 2021 final, maybe I was overwhelmed by the opportunity and underperformed,” Djokovic said at a press conference .

The 36-year-old Serb spoke about the situation of the 2021 season, when he was one step away from winning the Classic Grand Slam. After triumphing at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon, he was the favorite to win the US Open. However, Daniil Medvedev then got in his way in the final. The Russian confidently won in three sets. – I don’t want this to happen again, that’s why I will try to focus on what needs to be done and prepare tactically for this match – said “Nole”.
Will Medvedev surprise again?
Medvedev has already shown at this year’s US Open 2023 that he can take his tennis to new heights. In the semi-finals, he was not the favorite in the match against Carlos Alcaraz, but he won against the Spaniard in four sets. The third-seeded Russian will play in his fifth Grand Slam final. So far only one has won. It was the one during the 2021 US Open, where he surprised Djokovic.
– Novak has this mentality that when he loses, he’s never the same. That’s why he was so successful. If I want to beat him again, I’m going to have to be ten times better than that day. And that’s what I’m going to try to do, said the 27-year-old Muscovite (more info here).
Before Djokovic and Medvedev begin fighting for the men’s singles title, the women’s doubles final will take place. HAS. At 19:00 our time, Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealander Erin Routliffe, as well as German Laura Siegemund and Russian Vera Zvonareva will travel to the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Siegemund and Zwonariowa want to repeat the New York success of 2020.
