Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says an object was shot down over the Yukon region on his orders.
– I ordered the shooting down of an unidentified object that violated Canadian airspace, he wrote on Twitter.
Trudeau says the object was shot down by an American F-22 aircraft on behalf of NORAD. The Prime Minister says he spoke to US President Joe Biden.
– The Canadian military will now collect and analyze the wreckage of the object, continues the president.
Just over an hour before the Prime Minister’s announcement, Canadians reported World News that the United States-Canadian Aerospace Command (NORAD) was monitoring what was believed to be a possible spy balloon or two.
It has not been confirmed whether the downed object was in fact a balloon.
It is the second day in a row that an unknown flying object has been shot down in the northern regions of the American continent.
On Friday, the White House announced that an American fighter jet had shot down an object flying over Alaska near the border with Canada and specifically the Yukon Territory.
NORAD writes in an update Saturday night Norwegian time that work is underway to get hold of the object, which will rest on frozen water. This object would have been much smaller than the Chinese balloon that the United States shot down earlier in February.
The United States believes the Chinese balloon was a spy balloon. China says it was a misplaced weather balloon. This too should have flown over Canada.
It is not yet known if these three objects have a connection with each other.
