Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has given the green light to a controversial oil pipeline expansion, which critics say will destroy the environment.
The extension of the existing pipeline will transport even more oil from the interior province of Alberta to a port in Vancouver on the Pacific coast so that it can be exported abroad.

– Today, I am announcing that our government has approved the start of the Trans Mountain expansion project. The company plans to put shovels in the ground this construction season, Trudeau said at a news conference on Tuesday.
The project has drawn protests from environmentalists and indigenous groups. Several attempts have also been made to prevent development in the courts.
The case has led to a dispute between Canada’s two westernmost provinces, and it is also expected to play an important role in the election of a new national assembly in October.
