A stowaway was found Monday morning in the wheel arch of a KLM plane at Schiphol airport in the Netherlands. The man did not survive the flight.
The plane had departed from Canada, but had made several stopovers before landing at Schiphol. It is not yet known where the man boarded.
He says it Dutch newspaper AD.
– Not so unusual
The spokesman for the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee police service told the newspaper that the case was being further investigated.
– We are studying how the man managed to get on board. Either way, it’s not a crime. The victim died of hypothermia, said the spokesman.
– 50 less
He goes on to say that on long flights it gets up to 50 degrees below zero in the plane’s landing gear, and there’s not enough oxygen in the air to survive.
According to the spokesperson, the discovery is not as unusual as one might think.
– It happens that people find themselves in the wheel arches of an aircraft. Sometimes they came out alive, but it often ends in death given the sharp drop in temperature in the air, he tells AD.
