Bianca Andreescu had match ball but was knocked out of the 2023 Australian Open Grand Slam after a thriller. Iga Świątek’s next rival will be Cristina Bucsa from Spain.

after 1:00 Polish time Iga Świątek faced Colombian Camila Osorio at the Rod Laver Arena under a closed roof. There were no surprises and the leader of the ranking confidently qualified for the third round of the Australian Open 2023. Another rival for the Pole came out of Bianca Andreescu’s clash with Cristina Bucsa. Due to the rain, the tennis players waited a long time before being able to go out on the court. The meeting started a few minutes after noon. 7:00 a.m. and it was a thriller. The 2019 US Open Canadian champion had the match ball but lost 6-2, 6-7(7), 4-6.

The first set did not promise great emotions. Andreescu got two breaks and won it convincingly. In the second game, there was a role reversal up to a point, and then a fierce battle broke out. The Canadian started the hunt with 1:5. She defended the set ball and led to a tie-break. In it, she went from 2-4 to 6-5, but wasted the match ball. Bucsa showed more composure.

In the third set, Andreescu made it 2-2 from 0-2 to give up a serve in game five. The Canadian had a break point at 3:3, but she didn’t use it. Then she had one more chance to make up for the loss. In the 10th game, Bucsa defended and then used the first match ball.

In the match, which lasted two hours and 51 minutes, the two tennis players threw 31 knockouts. Bucsa made 50 unforced errors and Andreescu made 53. There were 11 breaks, six of which were scored by the Spaniard. The competitor from the Iberian Peninsula scored six points less (97-103), but advanced to the third round.

Bucsa has already recorded the best Grand Slam start of his career so far. She won a match at the US Open last year. She made her Australian Open debut last season and was knocked out in the first round.

Świątek and Bucsa will meet on Friday. This will be their first meeting.
