Shock at the US Open! Last year’s semi-finalist was eliminated

Caroline Garcia overboard at the 2023 US Open Grand Slam! The Frenchwoman was eliminated from the New York event after losing to Chinese qualifier Yafan Wang. In the next round is the American Jessica Pegula, who was not surprised by the Italian Camila Giorgi.

Caroline Garcia (WTA 7) reached her first Grand Slam singles semi-final at the US Open a year ago. This time, she was eliminated in the first round. The French lost 4-6, 1-6 against Yafan Wang (WTA 114). For the Chinese, this is the second victory against a tennis player in the Top 10 ranking. In 2019 in Miami, she eliminated Elina Svitolina.

In 70 minutes, Garcia served seven aces and committed six double faults. She had three break points but didn’t use any. Wang converted four out of 10 chances to break. The Chinese managed seven finishes with 11 unforced errors. Garcia was credited with 18 straight wins and 34 errors.

Jessica Pegula (WTA 3) was not surprised and beat Camila Giorgi (WTA 52) 6:2, 6:2. During the match, which lasted 82 minutes, the American played eight aces and scored 25 of 28 points on her first serve. She blocked a break point and got four break points. She landed 28 final touches with 13 unforced errors. The Italian recorded 16 outright wins and 31 errors.

Marketa Vondrousova (WTA 9) beat Na-Lae Han (WTA 241) 6-3, 6-0 in one hour. The Wimbledon champion erased five of her seven break points and got seven break points. The Czech player finished the match with 27 knockouts and 10 unforced errors. The Korean has scored 13 consecutive balls and 21 errors.

Ekaterina Aleksandrova (WTA 20) won 7:6(4), 5:7, 6:4 Leylah Fernandez (WTA 67), finalist of the US Open 2021. In the first set, the Russian came back from 2:4 , and in the second set she squandered the 3:1 lead. There were also some twists in the third game. The Canadian went from 0:3 to 4:3, but lost the last three games. The marathon lasted three hours and four minutes.
