The Nature Summit in Montreal – Bolsonaro’s Last Salute

MONTREAL (Dagbladet): For about a day, Climate and Environment Minister Espen Barth Eide has been in Montreal, Canada, trying to save the world’s nature and biodiversity. Here is a man he would have liked to do without: the one who lost the elections in Brazil at the end of October, and who will leave the presidency at the end of the year, Jair Bolsonaro.

– This is a last greeting from Bolsonaro, who is now 16 days old. It’s a tragedy. WE spent a lot of time on Bolsonaro during the Sharm el-Sheikh summit, and the same is happening now, Barth Eide tells Dagbladet.

steep fronts

At the nature summit in Montreal, negotiators from all countries are working to reach a historic agreement for nature from early morning until late at night. Once again, Brazil leads the way by being a brake pad. Their representatives left a number of important meetings.

– Brazil presented a number of rather exorbitant demands, and then there was a so-called exit from Brazil of Bolsonaro in several meetings, with a group of developing countries in tow, Barth Eide told Dagbladet.

It’s nothing new that Brazil has been a drag on climate and nature summits, but Bolsonaro appears to be using his final weeks to hammer down possible nature deals before he leaves. On January 1, Lula da Silva returns to the presidency. He also has a few people in place in Montreal, but they are not part of the Brazilian negotiating delegation.
