Top seed Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jordan Thompson in the second round of the Cincinnati ATP Masters 1000 hard-court tournament to claim his 50th victory of the season. Andrei Rublev is absent.

After a disappointing performance in Toronto, where he was eliminated in the quarter-finals, Carlos Alcaraz set his sights on performing better at the Cincinnati ATP Masters 1000. The Spaniard’s inaugural game in Ohio, however, turned out to be very difficult for him. To beat Jordan Thompson (7:5, 4:6, 6:3) in the second round (in the first round), he had to spend three hours on the court.

Like last week, Alcaraz was struggling with his tennis. He tried to play aggressively and made 35 knockouts, but his main weapons failed him – the pass (he only served three aces and three breaks) and the forehand (committed 15 unforced errors ). Finally, a few minutes after 01:00 local time, he could raise his hands in triumph.

– It was not easy, but I finally found my best level. We waited all day to play this match, and when we went out on the pitch, it started to rain. But you have to have a way to win, even in these situations,” said Alcaraz, quoted by atptour.com, for whom this is the 50th match won this season.

The first sensation of the tournament, since it is the defeat of a top 10 tennis player against a rival in the 60th place in the ranking, was the elimination of Andrei Rublev. The Moscow number seven, after three and a quarter hours of fierce competition, lost 6:7(10), 7:5, 6:7(3) to Emil Ruusuvuori as he led with a break of advance to the deciding set.

Also eliminated Félix Auger-Aliassime, tournament “12”. The Canadian, who broke a series of six consecutive defeats on Monday, did not follow the blow and proved to be weaker than Adrian Mannarino (4-6, 4-6) on Tuesday.

The last matches of the first round took place on Tuesday evening. Toronto finalist Alex de Minaur beat JJ Wolf 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 and now faces Gael Monfils. Wildcard holder Mackenzie McDonald won 7-5, 6-1 Yannick Hanfmann and will fight for promotion to the Round of 16 with sixth-seeded Holger Rune.
