Kåfjord is one of Norway’s best prepared municipalities for climate change

Kåfjord Municipality is among the best prepared municipalities in the country to deal with climate change. This appears in the Noradapt preview.
With a 5th place, just behind the big municipalities like Oslo and Stavanger, they are making a huge effort despite their small size.
– I am very proud that we, as a small municipality with 2,000 inhabitants, are on this list, acting municipal manager Gunn Andersen told NRK.
Andersen believes they are so successful because they take the job seriously.
In recent years, the municipality has been affected by several landslides, rockfalls and floods.
– This experience shows that this work is important. We learn a lot after such events.
Currently, eleven landslide objects are being monitored by the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate. Three of them are located in Kåfjord.
Andersen says the recipe for success is continuous work. They have emergency plans, exercises and are in dialogue with the state administrator about it.
– We are also one of the few small municipalities in Norway to have its own emergency preparedness advisor.
On the same ranking created by Noradapt, it also appears that Kåfjord is among the municipalities included less climate risk in 2100.
Andersen doesn’t think that means they have to prepare any less.
– I don’t think we are less exposed, but if an incident does occur, Kåfjord is less built up than the other municipalities on the list.
In contrast, the Sami municipalities of Nesseby and Kautokeino are among those making the least effort to address climate change. See the overview here.
