With their backs against the wall before their last group match, Mali did not fall into Canada’s trap. The Aiglons therefore won by a large margin (5-1) to qualify for the round of 16 where they will not face Senegal.
The group stage of the Under-17 World Cup in Group B has delivered its verdict. After two victories in as many outings, Spain stalled against Uzbekistan (2-2) but finished first in the group with seven points. For its part, Mali made short work of it of Canada (5-1) and qualifies for the fifth time in its history for the round of 16 of the competition.
At the dawn of the last day, the Malians had three points, the same number of units as Uzbekistan. It was therefore necessary to win against a Canadian team with zero points to avoid the calculations. Largely dominant, the Aiglons made the difference in two stageswith goals from Ibrahim Diarra (14th), Barry (26th), Ibrahim Kanate (73rd), Makalou (77th) and Thierro (90th+1).
A very likely Senegal – Uzbekistan in the round of 16
Second in the group, Mali therefore avoids 3rd place and the possibility of facing the first in group D in the round of 16, which should, barring a huge surprise, be Senegal. The Aiglons will face the second in Group F, Venezuela or Mexico. LUzbekistan, which should necessarily gain a place as best third, most likely advances as Senegal’s opponent in the round of 16.
Indeed, if they manage to maintain their place as leader of group D at the end of their match against Japan this Friday (09:00 GMT), Serigne Saliou Dia’s players will face in the next round a better third who will come out of the group B, E or F. And with its four pointsts in third place in Group B, Uzbekistan is best placed, awaiting the end of the group stage in Groups E and F.
