The League of Nations in a new formula

In 2020 the games were canceled due to the pandemic, and the previous edition took place in the so-called bubbles – all teams were gathered in Rimini and all matches were played there.

The number of tournaments was reduced from five to three, with each participant playing four matches. The top eight teams will advance to the final tournament, to be held July 20-24 in Bologna, Italy.

In the beginning, the volleyball players played in Ottawa. The world champions and silver medalists from the previous VNL, seeded No. 2, played their first match against Olympic bronze medalists Argentina and Italy. In Canada, they also played with France and Bulgaria. Then Nikola Grbić’s players moved to Sofia, where from June 21 to 26 they faced Brazil, Canada, Australia and the United States, and the last tournament was held in Gdańsk (5-10 July), where Poland faced Iran, China and the Netherlands. and Slovenia.

The top eight teams each qualified for the final tournament, which is played on a knockout system.

Poland beat Iran in the quarter-finals

In the quarter-finals of the final tournament, Poland beat Iran 3:2 (25:21, 24:26, 25:18, 16:25, 15:7) and qualified for the semi-finals of the League of Nations. The Whites-Reds will face the Americans for the final of the Bologna tournament on Saturday. The second pair of this phase is made up of Italians and French.

In the quarter-finals, the Americans won with the Brazilians defending the trophy 3:1, and the hosts’ game against the Dutch ended with the same result. In turn, France won against Japan 3-0.

The League of Nations instead of the World League

The Nations League replaced the World League in 2018. Biało-Czerwoni took fifth place in the first matches, in 2019 they were on the lowest step of the podium, and in the previous edition they lost against Brazil in the final. Women’s representation was ninth, fifth and eleventh respectively.

In the latest edition Nations League Volleyball Players Brazil triumphed. The Poles took second place. In Nations League Volleyball Players the best for the third consecutive time were the Americans. Biało-Czerwony eventually took 11th place.
