President Joe Biden currently has no intention of using the 14th Amendment to force increased government borrowing without Republican support.
– This will not solve the problem we have at the moment, said Karine Jean-Pierre, press secretary at the White House, on Tuesday.
Legal experts believe that the Treasury will be able to ignore the debt ceiling adopted by the United States if it adopts the 14th Amendment.
This means that the United States will be able to take on more borrowing and, in this way, it will be able to service the national debt without the Republicans agreeing to raise the debt ceiling.
Negotiations are currently underway between Republicans in the House of Representatives and the White House over the debt ceiling. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said a deal on Tuesday is unlikely.
The US Treasury Department has set June 1 as the deadline for an agreement on raising the debt ceiling to be reached. Several Republicans have expressed that it does not appear that the White House is in a hurry, writes the AP news agency.
Jean-Pierre opposes it.
– Biden wants this done as soon as possible, she said.
