Have you ever wondered why red scrub is listed as both an edible mushroom and a poisonous mushroom? The explanation is simple, but important to remember to avoid getting sick.
according to Health care it is an edible mushroom when heat-treated and toxic if eaten raw.
– Red scrub is probably the mushroom that causes the most cases of stomach symptoms in Norway, writes the website.
– Unpleasant symptoms
To avoid symptoms, the mushroom should be heat treated at high temperature for 15 to 20 minutes before eating.
– It causes unpleasant symptoms in the stomach and intestines when it is not sufficiently heat treated. Symptoms usually appear 30 minutes to 3 hours after ingestion.
Common reactions are nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea.
– Usually no treatment is necessary and symptoms can be observed at home. If poorly heat-treated red scrub is consumed, symptoms may become severe and require medical attention. If symptoms are severe, contact the Poison Control Center for advice.
Remember this
Earlier in August, DinSide was in contact with Pål Karlsen, general director of the Norwegian Association of Mushrooms and Useful Plants, who encouraged people to check with mushroom control if in doubt.
– Sometimes we’re a little too quick to scare people and keep them from finding out what it is. Something is dangerous, but if you are careful and check with mushroom control, you are completely safe.
