A big day for American tennis players in Rabat. Argentina was a surprise

Wednesday in Rabat (WTA 250) belonged to the Americans. Sloane Stephens, Alycia Parks and Peyton Stearns qualified for the quarter-finals. Argentina’s Julia Riera knocked out Egypt’s Mayar Sherif.

On Wednesday, all the second round matches took place in Rabat. Sloane Stephens (WTA 35) defeated Timea Babos (WTA 237) 6-3, 6-1. In 79 minutes, the 2017 US Open champion converted five of her 10 break points. She scored 60 points out of 100 played.

Peyton Stearns (WTA 69) defeated Leylah Fernandez (WTA 51) 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. The 2021 Canadian Open US runner-up committed eight double faults in a match that lasted two hours and two minutes. There were 11 breaks including 6 scored by the American. Stearns will face Stephens in the quarter-finals.

Alycia Parks (WTA 49) in 81 minutes won 6:4, 6:1 with Kamilla Rachimowa (WTA 85). The American sent seven aces, and her rival had only one. Both players committed seven double faults. Parks scored 27 of 32 points on his first serve. She canceled four break points and turned three of seven opportunities into breaks.

Julia Riera (WTA 195) beat Mayar Sherif (WTA 55) 7-5, 7-5. The Argentinian made up for the break loss in both sets. In the first, she went from 3:5 down and defended two set plays, one each in the ninth and 10th game. In the second, she was reborn from 2:4, only to waste four match points at 5:4. At 5-5, Riera blocked two break points and then earned a break to advance.

Defending champion Martina Trevisan (WTA 26) won 7-5, 7-5 against Jana Fett (WTA 266). In the first set, the Italian came back from 0:3 and defended the ball for the set in the 10th game. In the second from 1:3 it turned out to be 5:3. She wasted two match points and a 5:5 draw appeared on the scoreboard. The last two games have been won by Trévisan, a Roland Garros semi-finalist a year ago.

Tatjana Maria (WTA 64) lost 7-6(1), 4-6, 5-7 to Lucia Bronzetti (WTA 102). The German Wimbledon semi-finalist last year squandered her 7-6, 4-2 lead. Since then, she has lost seven games in a row. In the third set, Maria went from 0:3 to 4:3, but the end belonged to the Italian.
