The latest ATP rankings were released on Monday. After the end of the hard-court ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Toronto, Hubert Hurkacz and Jan Zieliński tumbled down the world rankings.

As part of the 2023 National Bank Open competition, Hubert Hurkacz fought a three-set battle with Carlos Alcaraz, but was ultimately eliminated in the third round (more here). That meant he only saved 90 of his 600 points in the final of Canada’s International Championships last year in Montreal.

“Hubi” did not keep his 17th place for all that. On Monday, he fell to 20th position. He could have even dropped out of the Top 20, but Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina failed to reach the ATP Masters 1000 final in Toronto.

There were several changes at the top of the ATP rankings on Monday. Toronto champion Jannik Sinner of Italy moved from eighth to sixth place (more here). Australian Alex de Minaur, beaten by him in the final, went from 18th to 12th place. For the two participants in the decisive duel of the 2023 National Bank Open tournament, these are the highest positions of their careers.

Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz remained in the lead, ending his competition in Toronto in the quarter-finals and going the distance on second-placed Serbian Novak Djokovic to 600 points. The third is the Russian Danil Medvedev, the fourth the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, and the Top 5 is closed by the Dane Holger Rune. The 20-year-old replaced fifth-placed Norwegian Casper Ruud, who fell to seventh. Russian Andrei Rublev moved up to eighth place. Americans Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe complete the top ten.

White-Red runner-up Kamil Majchrzak fell to 234th on Monday. Daniel Michalski (ATP 268), Maks Kaśnikowski (ATP 329) and Kacper Żuk (ATP 341) also fell. The latter lost 36 places. Right behind him, in 344th place, is Filip Peliwo.

Bad news for Jan Zieliński. Our top doubles player competed unsuccessfully in Toronto and fell from 7th to 17th on Monday. It’s the effect of losing points for last year’s semi-final, which he reached in Canada with Hurkacz. Dutchman Wesley Koolhof and Briton Neal Skupski remained at the top of the doubles standings, which, despite losing in the second round with the pair of Hubert Hurkacz and Mate Pavić, are still the best duo of the 2023 season.

The best tennis players in the world will face off this week in another major event leading to the US Open Grand Slam, the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.
