NEW YORK (Dagbladet): Canada’s Indigenous leaders are now demanding a thorough investigation into all former residential schools after the shocking discovery of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia.
– Federal authorities must play a role to ensure that these families learn what happened, that these families learn the truth, that they can turn the page and that Canada can face the reality of this genocide , said party leader Jagmeet Singh of the New Democratic Party. The old school was one of the largest of its kind in Canada. It was managed by the Catholic Church from the end of the 19th century until the end of the 1960s. It was then taken over by the federal authorities and continued until the end of the 1970s.

In 2015, a commission released a comprehensive report investigating boarding schools in Canada where tens of thousands of Indigenous children were separated from their families and forced to attend these schools.
There were at least 130 such schools in Canada until 1996. Many were operated by the Catholic Church or directly by the government. According to the commission, at least 4,000 children must have died from illness, neglect, accidents or mistreatment while attending these schools, according to CNN.
