Joyce Murray in Norway to learn more about Hima Seafood’s land trout farming.
Canadian Fisheries and Oceans Minister Joyce Murray recently made a short visit to Norway. The first stop was at Hima Seafood, which is building the world’s largest land trout farming facility in Rjukan.
– Hima’s technology and solutions for land-based freshwater farming are very interesting. I look forward to following the development of the company now that they are nearing the start of production, and have asked our ambassador to stay in touch with Hima, Joyce Murray said in a press release.
Sten Falkum and Heidi Kyvik presented to the Canadian delegation in Oslo. Falkum is CEO of Hima, while Kyvik is CEO of Eyvi, which supplies the RAS system to Hima.
– We obviously think it’s fun that Hima Seafood is getting noticed internationally, says Sten Falkum.
– Tomorrow’s food production must find solutions that do not exploit resources that are already under pressure. The fact that the Minister of Fisheries of Canada wanted to meet Hima and hear about our way of farming is very positive. Murray is very committed to sustainable solutions and has taken bold steps in Canada to protect the ocean. If Hima Seafood can inspire Canadians to invest in sustainable land-based agriculture, that’s good for everyone, says Falkum.
The Canadian Ambassador to Norway, Deirdre Kent, also participated in the visit to Hima, who spoke extensively about the land-based trout RAS facilities and the use of fresh water.
– Hima Seafood was noticed in Canada and their presentation was very impressive. We see opportunities for cooperation between Norway and Canada in land-based fish farming, concludes Kent.
