Flooding in Merritt, in the province of British Columbia, among other things caused damage to the city’s sewage treatment plant and two bridges were washed away by the water masses.
In the town of Agassiz, closer to the coast, 275 people were trapped in cars between two landslides on Monday night.
Since the early hours of the morning, several motorists elsewhere had also been affected by landslides, the province’s Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth told a news conference.
Among other things, the authorities deployed helicopters to lift stranded motorists. Nine people were sent to hospital with minor injuries following the landslide in Agassiz.
– We are ready to provide any kind of help needed, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted on Monday.
In the city of Abbotsford, just east of Vancouver, residents of more than 100 homes have been ordered to evacuate due to the risk of flooding and landslides.
Officials across the country said up to 250 millimeters of rain were expected in and around Vancouver on Monday, as much as the region usually receives in a month. Last week a tornado was seen just outside Vancouver airport, and this summer record temperatures were measured in British Columbia where more than 500 people died and a city was destroyed by a Forest fire.
