Cermaq says semi-closed solution exceeded expectations

Here, the semi-closed system is assembled at the Cermaq site on Vancouver Island.

Cermaq Canada implements semi-closed cage in production plan after successful trial.

Cermaq Canada will use a semi-closed system to produce post-smolts following a successful second trial of the technology in British Columbia.

Cermaq began testing Fiizk’s cage system at a site on Vancouver Island in December 2020, where they were to transfer a share of 495,000 600 gram smolts and a 1.5 kg grouper into these sea cages. .

Technical problems with one of the pumps used to supply water to the 15,000 cubic meter compound led to the death and prompted Cermaq to end the attempt earlybut the company has since made another attempt after making adjustments to the system.

Improved stream conversion

– We had exceptional results with the phase 2 study, based on the modifications we made, said a spokesperson for Cermaq.

– The system actually exceeded expectations and we observed remarkable growth rates in the cage, comparable or even better than traditional cages. Feed conversion rate also showed improvements, underscoring the success of our trial period, the company points out.
