Cows affected by an avalanche in Kåfjord receive help
A barn with around 100 cows was hit when a large avalanche hit Kåfjord on Friday. Now they have received help and are being treated.
Mayor Bernt Eirik Isaksen Lyngstad confirms this to NTB.
– The avalanche hit the barn, it did not sweep it away, so there was no major physical damage to the cows. Their bodies are intact. Everyone is fine now, apart from the fact that it was obviously a heartbreaking experience for the couple who run the barn, he says.
The married couple who lived on the farm took cover just before the avalanche hit, while the cows were locked in the barn for some time.
Over the weekend, however, NGI assessed the area as safe enough for aid teams to visit the farm and, among other things, help milk the cows.
The married couple who live there have already stated, among other things NRK that they do not think this is enough and have requested that the cows be moved to another barn as they do not feel safe in the area.
Lyngstad told NRK on Saturday that the municipality considered the alternative of moving the cows, but it proved difficult in such a short time.
– The guard system has worked well so far, but those living there understandably felt unsafe with the weather and the fact that there was a landslide that went straight into their operations building, Lyngstad told NTB on Sunday.
