Canada has been fighting forest fires for several days. They mainly affected the province of Quebec where, among others, Montreal. As a result, there were doubts about the Canadian Grand Prix. F1’s position on this is already known.

According to Canadian media, the fires in Quebec are the worst in Canadian history, with more than 150 firefighting incidents reported in the past few days alone. The problem for residents is also noxious smoke, which has moved south from around Montreal and is even disturbing the United States. Above New York, the sky is orange, full of toxic dust.

Smoke in the air has led to reduced air quality, which is why residents of Canada and the United States are subject to various types of warnings. They were advised to stay at home and avoid any physical activity outside. Some authorities also distribute free masks to protect against the harmful effects of toxic smog.

In this situation, there were doubts as to whether the Canadian Grand Prix could be played. For Formula 1 racing on the track. Gilles Villeneuve has one week left in Montreal. In recent days, discussions have taken place between the race promoter, local authorities and F1 bosses. After their realization, a rather clear message was published.

“The event is not at risk, and all the main authorities have assured us that the situation in Montreal is significantly different from that of other regions of Canada and the northern United States. The risk is low and the air quality in Montreal is good. we read in the F1 statement.

The last fires took place about 800 km from Montreal. Currently, the air quality in this city is so good that residents have not been advised to stay at home.

The weather forecast for the next few days also looks optimistic for the organizers of the Canadian Grand Prix. Given the direction of the wind, it is supposed to blow toxic smoke away from Montreal. In addition, forecasters predict precipitation in the coming days, which should slightly improve the situation in the forests of the province of Quebec.

Formula 1 has already had to cancel a race this year. In mid-May, the Emilia-Romagna GP did not take place, which was linked to flooding in central Italy.
