Horizontal oil drilling – a “golden technology” for Norway

Johan Kr. Mikkelsen was Senior Vice President at Norsk Hydro when they started horizontal oil drilling at Troll. He tells how they developed the method on the Norwegian continental shelf and its importance in a national context.

Petrojarl 1, was the first floating production unit on the Norwegian continental shelf. Johan Kr. Mikkelsen was in charge when those at Petrojarl 1 carried out the all-important production tests of the horizontal wells, first at Oseberg and then at Troll. The conference also gives an overview of this, but will focus on how the development of horizontal sinks has taken place – organizationally, technologically and especially in the collaboration with suppliers.


About the speaker

Johan Kr. Mikkelsen started in the oil business in 1974. First at the Mongstad refinery, but with a transition to offshore production in 1983 after Norsk Hydro became the operator of the Oseberg field. He led Norsk Hydro’s drilling operations from 1992 to 2000 and later served as Senior Vice President for Oseberg, Troll, Drilling Business and NH Canada Oil&Gas. He was also project/production manager at Equinor for the Peregrino field in Brazil over the period 2008-2012.
